Red Sox Announce Several Roster Moves During Mariners Series

To clear up the two necessary spots on the 40-man roster, Boston designated infielder Brett Harris for assignment and placed young left-hander Eduardo Rivera on the 60-day IL with a lumbar strain, ending his season.

The Venezuelan-born Páez signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2021 but was picked up in the 2025 Rule 5 draft by the Chicago White Sox. He earned a spot on Chicago’s 2026 Opening Day Roster and made his MLB debut on March 26.

He struggled in three games out of the bullpen for the White Sox, allowing four hits and six earned runs (two home runs) through three appearances before being designated for assignment and returned to the Red Sox organization.

Páez made 17 appearances (7 starts) for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs this season and was called up to Triple-A Worcester on August 12th. Through his first three starts with the WooSox, Páez holds a solid 2.92 ERA across 12.1 innings.

The young righty is unlikely to give the Red Sox much length Tuesday night but will serve as a fresh arm with rosters expanding for what was a scheduled bullpen game with starter Sonny Gray being pushed back to the weekend. Boston should have Brayan Bello available as a bulk option behind Páez.

Kiner-Falefa’s arrival comes as no surprise, as he indicated during his rehab assignment in late-August that he would be comfortable taking his time and becoming the September 1 call-up. The 31-year-old rehabbed alongside Roman Anthony and Trevor Story but, given the success of the big-league club, recognized it was in the team’s best interest to delay his return until rosters expand.

Kiner-Falefa posted a .277/.344/.361 slash through 47 games this season as a versatile utilityman. The nine-year veteran will give the Red Sox options up the middle of the infield to spell starters Story and Nick Sogard while also bringing experience at first base while Willson Contreras (hamstring) remains on an IL stint.
