The Boston Red Sox are entering the offseason with momentum after making the MLB playoffs for the first time since 2021, finishing with an 89–73 record. Despite an early postseason exit in the AL wild card round against the New York Yankees, the Red Sox feature one of the strongest young cores in the league and have a bright future ahead.

Boston has remained active in free agency and continues to explore trade opportunities to strengthen the roster.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Tuesday , the Red Sox are likely to move either outfielder Jarren Duran or Wilyer Abreu to clear a path for left-handed slugger Roman Anthony to take over an everyday role in the outfield. The team is also reportedly interested in bringing back third baseman Alex Bregman, who opted out of his contract with Boston in early November.

On Tuesday, the Red Sox announced a trade with a division rival, the Tampa Bay Rays. “The #RedSox have acquired INF Tristan Gray from the Tampa Bay Rays, in exchange for minor league RHP Luis Guerrero. To make room for Gray on the 40-man roster, Boston designated 1B Nathaniel Lowe for assignment,” the team wrote on X.

Gray is a versatile infielder with the ability to play third base and could factor into the mix alongside Marcelo Mayer if Bregman signs elsewhere with a contending team.

Gray appeared in 30 games for Tampa Bay in 2025, posting a .231 batting average, .282 on-base percentage, .693 OPS, three home runs and nine RBIs. He has struggled to find consistent playing time in the big leagues but will get an opportunity now that he is on Boston’s 40-man roster.

Another important piece of the deal is first baseman Nathaniel Lowe being designated for assignment.

Lowe performed well for the Red Sox in 34 games after joining the team following his release from the Washington Nationals. For Boston, he posted a .280 batting average, .370 on-base percentage and .790 OPS. Still, it appears the Red Sox are moving forward with another left-handed first baseman in Triston Casas, who suffered a season-ending injury in 2025 that led to Lowe’s arrival in the first place.

The player Boston sent to Tampa Bay, right-hander Luis Guerrero, appeared in 13 games for the Red Sox in 2025 and recorded a 4.15 ERA across those outings.

This move is expected to be just the beginning for Boston as they retool the roster with hopes of making back-to-back playoff appearances.
