The Boston Red Sox haven’t made the postseason since the 2021 season, but they are on track to return, currently sitting with a 67–56 record and tied for the top spot in the American League Wild Card race with the Seattle Mariners.

The Red Sox’s young core has shown the organization’s future is bright, with third-year right fielder Wilyer Abreu once again being an impactful two-way player.

The 26-year-old had an exceptional debut season in 2023, finishing sixth in AL Rookie of the Year voting and winning his first Gold Glove Award for his defensive contributions.

In 107 games for Boston this year, Abreu has continued to produce at the plate, posting a .249 batting average, .322 on-base percentage, .798 OPS, and a career-high 21 home runs.

Wilyer Abreu Injury Update

During Sunday’s series finale against the Miami Marlins, Abreu appeared to injure himself while tagging from third base on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning. He was removed from the game moments later and replaced by Alex Bregman, with the team making a flurry of adjustments on the field.

The Red Sox announced shortly after that Abreu had left the game due to right calf tightness.

“Wilyer Abreu update: He left the game with right calf tightness, the Red Sox say,” wrote Tim Healey of the Boston Globe.

Red Sox Counting on Abreu Down the Stretch

If Abreu were to miss extended time, it would be another blow to Boston, who already lost rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer for the season due to wrist surgery.

With every game crucial, Abreu’s left-handed power and defensive abilities in right field would be sorely missed and hard for the team to replace.

If his injury leads to a stint on the injured list, it would leave a vacated spot in the outfield, forcing manager Alex Cora to possibly move Ceddanne Rafaela from second base back to center field and fill in second base with Romy Gonzalez.
