The Boston Red Sox have continued to put together an impressive season, and after taking their last two games and seven of their last ten, they now sit just 2.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL East division lead.

The Red Sox have remained productive despite missing right fielder Wilyer Abreu, who has been sidelined since August 17 with a right calf injury after leaving a game early against the Miami Marlins.

The 26-year-old star has posted a .253 batting average, .325 on-base percentage, .811 OPS, 22 home runs and 69 RBIs across 108 games, building on his breakout season last year that saw him finish sixth in AL Rookie of the Year voting.

Wilyer Abreu Injury Update

Boston initially expected Abreu to return for the next series against the New York Yankees, but the injury worsened, leading to an injured list stint.

With just one month remaining, every game Abreu has missed has been crucial. The Red Sox announced an update via manager Alex Cora, who revealed that Abreu has not yet resumed running.

“Progressing, but slowly,” Cora said via The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey. “We just have to be patient. It’s not a setback. It’s just not getting better.”

Although Cora emphasized that it’s not a setback and the team is being cautious, Abreu has continued to receive disappointing updates and time is running out in the regular season for his return.

It does make sense why the Red Sox are being careful with their young outfielder, as he remains under team control for four more seasons after 2025. However, Boston could use Abreu’s boost both offensively and defensively, especially given he won a Gold Glove Award last season.
