Red Sox Expected to Make Decision on Right-Hander With Questionable Future

Tanner Houck’s struggles reached a new low on Monday night, as the Red Sox right-hander allowed 11 earned runs in just 2.1 innings during a 14-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers. This disastrous outing mirrors a similar performance from just four weeks ago, when Houck surrendered 11 earned runs in a blowout loss to Tampa Bay. His ERA now stands at an alarming 8.04 through his first nine starts of the 2025 season.

“I’m just not getting the job done, which weighs on me heavily,” said Houck after the game, reflecting on his disappointing performance. Despite feeling physically fine, he acknowledged his struggles with fastball command and keeping his pitches in the zone, allowing the Tigers to hit five balls over 100 mph.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora stated that the team would “take a look at it” before deciding Houck’s next step. With Walker Buehler expected to return from the injured list soon and other pitching options emerging, including rookie Hunter Dobbins and the recovering Richard Fitts, the Red Sox are at a crossroads with Houck’s future in the rotation.

Houck, who was an All-Star in 2024, had high expectations entering 2025 but has failed to deliver. His struggles, which include just two swing-and-misses on Monday, have raised questions about his place in the rotation moving forward. With the Red Sox facing a pivotal moment in their season, Houck’s next few outings could determine whether he remains in the rotation or if the team seeks other options to fill his spot.
