Last offseason, the Boston Red Sox signed relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman to a one-year, $10.8 million contract. Before signing with the Red Sox, things were not looking great for the Cuban native. He had not made an All-Star team since 2021, and it was clear that his best days were behind him. Still, Boston needed bullpen help, and they took a chance on Chapman.
To say the 37-year-old has exceeded expectations during his first season in Boston would be an understatement. Through his first 56 appearances with the team, Chapman has a 1.06 ERA, 25 saves, and a career-best .0686 WHIP in 51 innings. Additionally, he made a return to the All-Star team, earning the eighth such nod of his career this season.
Chapman has been fantastic all season, but he has turned it up another level recently. The two-time World Series Champion has not allowed a hit to his last 38 batters faced, spanning across his last 13 appearances, which is a franchise record.

In the midst of his bounce-back season, many Red Sox fans are already clamoring for the team to re-sign Chapman in the offseason. However, Boston will have a big decision to make, and it could determine whether the team will bring the closer back for at least one more season.
The Red Sox signed Chapman to what now looks like a team-friendly contract last year, but his value has nearly doubled since joining the roster.
According to Spotrac, Chapman's market value is $18.7 million, even though he will be 38 years old once next season begins. The Red Sox will seemingly have a decision to make regarding Chapman and whether they will want to sign him to this big a contract in the offseason.
There is still a lot of baseball left, but things are looking good for Chapman and the Red Sox. With roughly a month left in the season, they own the first AL Wild Card spot and are four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL East lead. If they can end the season strong, then Boston should be able to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
While the Red Sox will need their entire team to bring their A-game the rest of the way, a lot of eyes will be on Chapman, whose performance down the stretch may indicate whether he will remain in the team's future plans or not.
