As part of the Boston Red Sox's return from the San Francisco Giants for trading Rafael Devers, the Red Sox landed two pitchers and two minor leaguers. While none of the players have made their Red Sox debut in the Major Leagues, one is getting closer to that debut.
According to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic on Twitter/X, the Red Sox are planning to have trade acquisition Jordan Hicks begin a rehab assignment. The flame-throwing reliever will head to Worcester to join the Triple-A team and begin a rehab assignment.

Jordan Hicks headed on rehab assignment in Worcester tomorrow. Expected to join Red Sox on next homestand
Not only is he beginning a rehab stint in the Minors, but the Red Sox are also expected to get him back in the Major Leagues during the team's next homestand. That sets up Hicks to make his Red Sox debut, or at least get activated, starting on Friday, June 27th against the Toronto Blue Jays.
While the Red Sox lost Devers, they freed up a ton of money and got four players in return. Kyle Harrison is pitching in Triple-A, while the other two players aren't close to making it to the Major Leagues.
Hicks, meanwhile, is expected to join the team in the next week. It'll be a highly anticipated showing for multiple reasons. The first is watching the new acquisition for the first time. But the other is seeing the first MLB impact from a player acquired for Devers.
In 2025, Hicks has a1-5 record with a 6.47 ERA. But that came as a starter with the Giants. In Boston, he'll go back to his reliever role, which is where he was at his best. Across 212 games as a reliever from 2018 to 2023, Hicks had a 3.85 ERA, 255 strikeouts, and 133 walks.
His command has always been an issue, but he's slowly improved in his MLB career. For Boston, his role will be to come out of the bullpen and provide his flame-throwing abilities ahead of Aroldis Chapman, one of the most legendary flame-throwers in baseball history.
Hicks debut in Boston is highly anticipated, and this report from McCaffrey is a great sign he's closing in on making his debut. In the meantime, Hicks will head to Triple-A for a rehab stint, as he works towards making his Red Sox debut as the first player received from the Devers trade to make his appearance in a Red Sox uniform.
