Red Sox make another significant addition to rotation

Boston Red Sox president of baseball operations Craig Breslow was clear that he wanted to improve the Red Sox rotation heading into 2026.

The Red Sox had seemingly accomplished that goal with a pair of trades. Sonny Gray was acquired from the Cardinals to slot behind ace Garrett Crochet to form a formidable 1-2 punch atop the rotation. Johan Oviedo, acquired in a trade with the Pirates, added depth to the middle of the rotation.

Despite those moves, the Red Sox were not done. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Red Sox have agreed to terms with pitcher Ranger Suarez. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Suarez will receive a five-year deal worth $130 million.

Ranger Suarez helps improve an impressive Red Sox rotation

Suarez had a solid performance for the Phillies last season. He posted a 3.20 ERA and a 1.220 WHIP over his 157.1 innings, striking out 151 batters with 38 walks. Suarez has also been excellent in the postseason, posting a 1.48 ERA and a 1.055 WHIP in 42.2 career playoff innings.

Adding Suarez gives the Red Sox what could arguably be the best rotation in baseball. Suarez, Gray and Oviedo will likely be the second, third and fourth starters, respectively. Brayan Bello is likely to fill the fifth starter role while prospects Payton Tolle and Connelly Early waiting in the wings.

Likewise, adding Suarez could allow the Red Sox to fill other holes in the roster using their impressive pitching depth. Second and third base are question marks, especially with Alex Bregman heading to Chicago. The Red Sox could use a right-handed hitting outfielder to balance a predominantly left-handed group. Suarez could have ripple effects down the roster as the Red Sox will likely focus on their lineup for the rest of the offseason.
