Red Sox Make Injury Decision on Triston Casas’ Replacement

The Boston Red Sox can not catch a break at first base. After losing Triston Casas for the season due to knee surgery, the Red Sox were forced to rely upon career bench player Romy González.

Now, González will head to the 10-day injured list with a left quad contusion, according to Chris Cotillo of Mass Live . Nick Sogard has been recalled from Triple-A Worcester.

González has been no mere fill-in, though, and through 17 games had built a strong argument for retaining a starting role. The 28-year-old utility man has a .308 batting average, a .785 OPS, and a 121 OPS+ with three stolen bases.

He has also significantly improved against right-handed pitching (.333 average, .828 OPS, 130 OPS+ in 2025 compared to a .217 average, .498 OPS, 40 OPS+ in 2024).

This is a tough blow for González, who finally had an opportunity to establish himself as a key cog for the Red Sox. Hopefully, he will only require a short stint on the IL.

Meanwhile, Sogard is an interesting pick for González’s replacement. After a solid 96 games at the plate for Worcester in 2024, Sogard has struggled to the tune of a .188 batting average and a .562 OPS so far.

He is a versatile defender, having already played at least three games at first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and right field in the minors. But, he has played by far the least at first and is not an ideal fit.

Boston could look externally for a natural fit at the three, whether that be via trade or waivers (Anthony Rizzo, perhaps?).
