A month ago, the Boston Red Sox's lineup took a major hit when they announced that shortstop Trevor Story would undergo surgery for a sports hernia.
Since his absence, things have gone from bad to worse for the Red Sox, who currently sit in last place in the American League East at 31-44 after reaching the playoffs last year for the first time since 2021.
Story, however, remains on the mend post-surgery and on the verge of making his return to the lineup.
“He’s actually progressing pretty nicely,” interim manager Chad Tracy said Thursday to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “Let’s call it ‘running ’; it’s not full-bore sprinting, but he’s jogging at a pretty good pace. He has actually swung a bat off a tee a little bit. He’s got a ways to go, but he’s in a better spot than I’d figured I’d see him at this point. He’s making pretty good steps.”

Things have not gone as anticipated for Story when he signed a six-year, $140 million deal with Boston before the start of the 2022 season. The 33-year-old has been placed on the injured list three times over his now five seasons with the Red Sox. He is also coming off his first season where he appeared in over 100 games with Boston.
This latest stint on the IL began when Story started to feel discomfort in his groin in mid-May, which led Boston to shut down their starting shortstop. Prior to landing on the shelf, Story was slashing just .206/.244/.303 with three home runs, 19 RBI and an OPS of .547 in 41 games.
But a month into his rehab, Story remains confident in his timeline of eight to 12 weeks for his expected return.
“We’re right on schedule, doing it the way we want to do it,” Story said. “I’m excited about that."
“We’re still trying to shoot for that, what I said the first time, 8-12 weeks. I think it’s just important to do it right this first time. From guys that I’ve talked to, and our surgeon, too. Get it right the first time so you don’t have to deal with it down the road," Story added.
Cotillo also reported that when the Red Sox travel to Coors Field this week to play the Colorado Rockies, Story will remain in Boston to continue his rehab with the hopes of returning either around or after the All-Star break. Since his surgery, Story has had to rebuild strength while hitting, fielding ground balls, and running.
Story also revealed that he anticipates pregame drills to be the last step of his rehab before the Red Sox activate him.
“I’m feeling good,” Story said. “I’m doing some running and with the legs, getting the strength back in there. Doing a lot more baseball stuff now. Hitting off the tee a little bit.
“I would say the defense and the side-to-side full-out sprints is probably the most taxing on it and somewhere where we have to be patient — but also aggressive at the same time."
Amid their lost season, the Red Sox would sure love to get Story back to help an offense that has been putrid for most of this year.
