Red Sox Make Triston Casas Decision After Injury News

First baseman Triston Casas suffered a scary-looking knee injury during the Boston Red Sox's Friday night game against the Minnesota Twins. After the game, Alex Cora hinted at the injury being significant.

Casas suffered a left patellar tendon rupture and will miss extensive time. He was placed on the 10-day injured list, and following that decision, the Red Sox made a corresponding roster move to fill his spot.

According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe on Bluesky, the Red Sox are calling up switch-hitter Abraham Toro. The 28-year-old will be on his fifth team in seven seasons and will fill Casas' roster spot after his injury.

Toro has major league experience with the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Athletics. He signed with the Red Sox on a minor league deal and will now get his chance back in the major leagues.

In 2024, Toro played for the Athletics in his most recent major league experience, hitting for a .240 batting average in 337 at-bats. He had 81 hits, 34 runs scored, 17 doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 26 RBI in 94 games.

Toro is replacing Casas on the Red Sox roster, but he doesn't have extensive first-base experience at the major league level. He's started just 15 games at first base in the majors, with most of his experience coming at second and third base.

During his 2025 minor league stint with the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate Worcester Red Sox, Toro had an impressive batting average of .310, with an OPS of .883. He had 31 hits in 100 at-bats, seven doubles, two triples, and two home runs.

After playing at a high level in the minors, Toro joins the Red Sox, replacing Casas on the major league roster. Toro's versatility will allow the Red Sox to move him around the infield, with Toro likely getting multiple chances at first base.
