The Boston Red Sox are 31 and 35 and sit 9.5 games behind the New York Yankees for the American League East division lead. With the recent struggles of the Red Sox, going 4-6 in their last ten games, there have been calls for Red Sox manager Alex Cora to be fired.
Not only are there rumors surrounding whether Cora is on the hot seat, but former players have come forward in defense of Cora. All of the rumors point to Cora being on the hot seat, at least until now.
According to a new report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Red Sox's manager isn't at risk of being fired.
"The Boston Red Sox may be playing sloppy and mediocre baseball," Nightengale writes, "But manager Alex Cora's job is safe."
Cora has been the Red Sox's manager for seven of the last eight seasons, only missing the 2020 COVID-19 season. In his seventh season with the Red Sox, he's on pace to have his lowest winning percentage at .470.
While he's on pace for his worst season as the manager of the Red Sox, a lot of the issues aren't just about the losing record. Fans and media alike are questioning the Red Sox's decision regarding top prospect Roman Anthony.
With Anthony on fire at the Minor League level, there have been countless calls for the Red Sox to call him up. As the season teeters on the edge of falling apart, those calls become even stronger, as a belief that Anthony can save the season spreads.
However, the lack of a call-up for Anthony ins't solely Cora's fault. Craig Breslow and the front office are partially to blame, too. Even then, Anthony is unlikely to 'save' the season.
But, with the manager taking center stage, it's easy to point to Cora as a scapegoat for the Red Sox's recent struggles. While Cora has struggled with the Red Sox in 2025, the losing record ins't solely on him.
Nightengale's report, that the Red Sox manager isn't in danger of being fired, is a big update on the Red Sox's season. Cora isn't going anywhere, and he's expected to remain the manager of the Red Sox as his job is safe.
