As the Boston Red Sox battle for the lead of the AL East, they have been facing a season full of ups and downs.
With a record of 24-25, the Red Sox are 4.5 games behind the New York Yankees in their conference and are on the verge of returning to a .500 winning percentage.
Recent news has struck that newly acquired righty Walker Buehler will return to the mound after a stint on the 15-day injured list, joining a pitching rotation that has been struggling to stay healthy this season.
Pitchers like Walker Buehler, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, and Brayan Bello have all missed portions of the 2025 season, but the Red Sox are expecting another pitcher to return very soon.
After suffering a torn UCL in a game in June of 2024 with the Los Angeles Angels, Patrick Sandoval signed with the Red Sox this past offseason on a two-year, $18.25 million deal.
While recovering from the injury that required surgery, he was seen throwing his first official bullpen session on Tuesday.
Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic spoke with Sandoval after his session.
"[He] called it a big step," McCaffrey took to X. "Said he'll throw two per week, next is Friday. He's not looking too far ahead, doesn't know the build-up plan but he feels good."
Spoke to Patrick Sandoval, he threw his first official bullpen since surgery in uniform in the bullpen - 16 pitches all fastballs. Called it a big step. Said he’ll throw two per week, next is Friday. He’s not looking too far ahead, doesn’t know the build up plan but he feels good

Sandoval's played six seasons in the MLB with this being his first with the Red Sox.
His best season came in 2022 where he finished with a 2.91 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and striking out 151 batters in 148.2 innings pitched.
Although the update doesn't include a set time for his return, seeing the lefty throwing on the mound again is positive sign.
With an injury-infested pitching rotation, the Red Sox will be looking forward to Sandoval's return to the mound some time this season.
