Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock unknowingly pitched through an absurd injury down the stretch of the season and into the playoffs.
Whitlock spent the latter part of the season pitching on a fractured tibia, according to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. The injury was initially misdiagnosed by Boston’s medical staff.
The injury was only discovered via imaging following the team’s loss to the New York Yankees during the American League Division Series. Whitlock was never sent for imaging despite spending the last month or so of the season in pain.
Whitlock struggled in his only playoff appearance, but did not allow an earned run in 7.1 September innings. That is quite remarkable considering the pain he was apparently pitching through.
The Red Sox training staff might face some questions over Whitlock being misdiagnosed. That comes after the front office has also faced some questions over its methods in the past year.
