It's already been 4 years since the Boston Red Sox took high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer with their highest draft pick in 50 years, taking him No. 4 overall in the 2021 MLB draft.
Now, on the doorstep of another draft and with Mayer knocking on the door of cracking Boston's big-league lineup, the Red Sox are being projected to take another shortstop in the 2025 MLB draft.
Bleacher Report's latest MLB mock draft predicts the Red Sox will select Corona (California) High School shortstop/left-handed pitcher Billy Carlson with the No. 15 overall pick in the first round.
From Bleacher Report: "Carlson is the most well-rounded two-way player in the 2025 class with five-tool potential at shortstop and electric stuff on the mound, including a fastball that touches 96 mph and a good breaking ball. His 6'1", 160-pound frame raises some questions about his durability on the mound and he might have a higher ceiling as a shortstop, but if he comes out bigger and stronger on the mound this spring that could change."
The 2025 MLB draft will take place from July 13-15 in Atlanta. The Red Sox selected Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft and gave him a $5 million signing bonus.
