There have been rumors that the Boston Red Sox could look to move on from some of their top players at the deadline.
After trading Rafael Devers, perhaps anything could happen over the next few weeks to a month and a half.
Searching for potential trade candidates around Major League Baseball, The Athletic recently named Wilyer Abreu as the seventh-ranked player who could be dealt.
While they added that they don't expect the Red Sox to move on from him, it's a concerning sign that he's still being mentioned in rumors.
“Abreu, like Duran, could become expendable in Boston thanks to the wave of young bats. But he’s also young enough (26) and under team control for long enough (2029) to be part of the Red Sox’s long-term plan, putting them in the driver’s seat for any potential negotiations.
“Even if the Red Sox are open to trading Abreu, there’s no rush to do so now. He’s putting up very good numbers at the plate that are in line with his strong rookie showing, and he will be in the mix for a second Gold Glove Award and won’t even be arbitration eligible until 2027,” they wrote.
There were rumors early on in the year that Abreu could be dealt, but it wouldn't have made much sense to move on from him then.
He was one of the better players in Major League Baseball, swinging the bat better than ever before.
He's continued to impress offensively, but with the Red Sox having some youngsters in the outfield, such as Roman Anthony, they might be inclined to trade him if the price is right.
