Red Sox Predicted to Make Major Marcelo Mayer Decision, Draft Young Star

The Boston Red Sox are entering a rebuilding phase after trading Rafael Devers, aging veterans like Trevor Story could be on their way out the door. With the MLB Draft less than a month away, Boston's plan for their future should be taking even clearer shape in the near future.

Story has struggled to stay healthy during his time with the Red Sox. He has not played in more than 100 games since 2021 with the Colorado Rockies and has struggled as a hitter since that season as well. His .231 batting average during his time with Boston is below market-replacement.

That is why ESPN's Kiley McDaniel is predicting that the Red Sox will draft star high school third baseman Gavin Fien 15th overall, which would allow Marcelo Mayer to move from third to shortstop.

"I'm a big believer in Fien," McDaniel said.

The 18-year-old is MLB.com's 26th rated prospect in the draft, but is described as one of the best young hitters in the class.

"Fien is a 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter with plenty of bat speed who produced consistent line drives against top competition all summer. While he has an unorthodox setup with high hands, he made it work and was always on time," the website says.

MLB.com also notes that he has added strength, which could help him add more power as he develops. Because of Fien's arm strength, the scouting report projects Fien as a third baseman, but also as a potential corner outfielder or first baseman depending on a team's needs.
