Red Sox Predicted to Trade $90 Million Outfielder

Boston Red Sox fans can finally celebrate the arrival of MLB’s top prospect, Roman Anthony, but when Wilyer Abreu returns from the IL, the outfield will be stuck in a logjam. This has sparked rumors that one of Boston’s other outfielders, more specifically, Jarren Duran, will be on the trade block.

In a recent article from Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, Miller labels all three non-Anthony outfielders (Duran, Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela) as potential trade pieces. No one knows how this juggling act will play out or who the Red Sox will part with if they even part with one of these three. But there is a name Miller mentions that is as good as gone.

“For what it's worth, Masataka Yoshida ($18.6 million in each of 2025, 2026 and 2027) is probably going to be on the trade block, too, if he makes it back from his labrum surgery before the trade deadline," he wrote. "Boston's former DH has yet to embark upon a rehab assignment, but the plan upon making [Rafael] Devers the primary DH was to bring Yoshida back as an OF. But now we're talking five outfielders for three spots, and the Red Sox might as well try to turn two of those into assets they can actually use on a regular basis.”

Thanks to his shoddy defense, Yoshida has become a point of controversy. But his defense aside, Yoshida has done quite well at the dish. In two years with Boston, Yoshida slashed .285/.343/.433 with 35 home runs over the course of 915 at-bats. Still, at a price of $90 million, the Red Sox were expecting to receive more than a DH with marginal power; however, this shouldn’t distract us from the fact that he had been one of the team’s most productive hitters until his injury.

Nonetheless, with Rafael Devers entrenched as their DH, Yoshida's roster spot is gone. While there is a distinct possibility that two Red Sox outfielders will be finding new homes this season, the chances of Yoshida going are nearly certain.
