This past Saturday, the Boston Red Sox shocked the MLB by firing longtime manager Alex Cora. The team is languishing at the bottom of the American League after the opening month of the season. Although Cora seemed secure in his role despite the very slow start, the Red Sox front office decided to take action to salvage their chances of reaching the postseason.
On Sunday morning, Boston Red Sox president Sam Kennedy and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow addressed reporters following the dismissal of Alex Cora the previous night. Kennedy declared that the decision to fire Cora was suggested by Breslow. The ownership was fully supportive of his recommendation.
“Craig leads our baseball operation, and he’s made several bold decisions and recommendations, and this was one of them,” Kennedy said during a news conference Sunday alongside Breslow in Baltimore. “We fully support it. That’s why we took the action we took yesterday.”
Sam Kennedy says the move to dismiss Alex Cora came on Craig Breslow’s recommendation, and that the organization firmly stands behind the decision.

Breslow took over his role in the Red Sox organization at the end of the 2023 campaign. The former left-handed relief pitcher also won the 2013 World Series title with the franchise.
During the press conference at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Craig Breslow stated that the decision to remove Alex Cora from his role reiterates their faith in the current Boston Red Sox roster. He feels there is still adequate time remaining for the team to bounce back and earn a playoff berth.
“It really comes down to the belief that we have in the players,” Breslow said. “And the belief that we have in the group to accomplish what we set out to accomplish. By acting today, it gives us 135 games ahead of us.
“We’ve got almost a full season’s worth of run to take advantage of this fresh start and ultimately to compete for a division and a deep postseason run in the way that we talked about it and envisioned and believed heading into spring training.”
Chad Tracy was promoted from his role with Triple-A Worcester to become the interim manager for the Red Sox. He started his tenure with a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon.
