Red Sox Projected to Make More Major Moves After Rafael Devers Trade

The Boston Red Sox entered the season as a trendy pick to make some noise in the American League. Few, if any, predicted the Red Sox to win the AL East, but a Wild Card spot didn't appear to be out of the picture.

To say things haven't gone as planned would be an understatement, even as the team fights for its playoff life.

Boston traded its best player, Rafael Devers, to the San Francisco Giants last week and, now, two more of its young stars find themselves on the trading block. So much so, in fact, that the two players are listed among the 10 most likely players to be traded by the MLB deadline this year.

Jarren Duran, the 28-year-old leftfielder, and Wilyer Abreu, the 26-year-old rightfielder, ranked No. 1 and No. 8 in The Athletic's big board of names that could be on the move over the course of the next week six weeks.

If the Red Sox were to trade both players, signals abound the organization sees itself as a re-tooling. Yes, even with a 38-37 record, sitting a half-game back of a Wild Card spot entering Wednesday's games.

Duran is in the midst of a third straight solid season, though it isn't as good as his 2024 campaign that saw him an All-Star who led the league in doubles and triples. His slash line in 2025 is just .261/.316/.417, more than 100 points lower than last year's OPS.

But a strong glove, ability to take walks and hit for gap power, along with his age, make him a hot commodity on the market. As is his mate over in right.

Abreu has proven himself a legitimate run producer in his second full season in the majors. His 13 home runs lead the team now that Devers has moved on and Abreu's .471 slugging percentage ranks second, only behind resurgent Alex Bregman. He's also coming off a Gold Glove season as a rookie, showing his defensive chops.

It's no guarantee either player is moved, but according to The Athletic, don't be surprised if general manager Craig Breslow doesn't further blow up the Red Sox core.
