An often-forgotten piece of the puzzle for the Boston Red Sox has made an important step toward his return to the field.

Triston Casas, who has been out since May of 2025 with knee and rib injuries, is entering into the early stages of a hitting progression according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. The 26-year-old is now hitting off of a tee and facing soft toss pitches as he rehabs from a rib muscle strain.

Casas first went down on May 2 of last year when he took an ugly stumble at first base against the Minnesota Twins, rupturing the patella tendon in his left knee, which ended his season. While in the final stages of recovering from knee surgery in April of this year, Casas was shut down from swinging after suffering an intercostal strain on his left side.

He underwent further imaging and was transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 22. Casas previously dealt with an injury to the mid-section when he was limited to just 63 games in 2024 due to torn cartilage is his rib cage.

As the unfortunate injuries have piled up throughout his career, Casas's long road to recovery has turned in very little updates this season. The latest on the young slugger came in late May, when manager Chad Tracy told Christopher Smith of MassLive that he was "approaching" a light swinging progression and rotation exercises.

Healey's report from Sunday confirms that Casas is starting to move through this crucial step. Before his setback, the Red Sox had hoped to see the first baseman play in spring training games in April with the goal of getting his strong left-handed bat back in the lineup alongside offseason acquisition Willson Contreras.

Boston has been inept in the power department thus far, and the big swinging Casas has been a clear loss. Since his breakout season in 2023 when he mashed 24 home runs, he has appeared in just 92 games.

While it may be too late to expect Casas to bring the Red Sox a jolt that will turn the season around, getting him back on the field before the end of the year would be a huge moment for both the team and player. With the uncertain future of Contreras given trade deadline rumors, the injury-plagued first baseman could still be central to Boston's long-term plans.
