The Boston Red Sox are hoping to reach the Major League Baseball Playoffs once again in 2027. Boston is making a pitching trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, as the team looks to re-shape the roster.

“The Red Sox today traded LHP Eduardo Rivera to the St. Louis Cardinals, in exchange for minor league RHP Juan García,” Boston announced on X, formerly Twitter.

Rivera appeared in four games for Boston during the 2026 season. He posted a 6.30 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP. He started three of those contests.

“Rivera, 23, is a 6-foot-7, 237-pound southpaw from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Originally an 11th round selection by the Oakland Athletics in the 2021 MLB Draft out of C.A.D.E.S.T. (Colegio Acelerado de Educacion Secundaria y Tecnica) in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Rivera made his Major League debut at Fenway Park in Boston on April 22, 2026 against the New York Yankees,” MLB.com reported.

Garcia meanwhile has never appeared in a MLB game. He is clearly a pitcher though that Boston thinks a lot of.

“García, an 18-year-old right hander out of Montemorelos, Mexico, pitched the last two seasons for the Dominican Summer League Cardinals, going 6-6 with a 3.87 ERA in 23 games,” MLB.com reported.

The Red Sox lost in an American League Wild Card series in the 2026 playoffs, to the New York Yankees. Boston finished the 2026 campaign in third place in the American League East.

St. Louis meanwhile missed the postseason. While the Cardinals were going through a rebuild, the team nearly made the playoffs. The Cardinals struggled though in the last month of the season.

St. Louis finished the year in fourth place in the National League Central, with a 77-85 record.
