Romy González is officially back for the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox have reinstated González from the 60-day injured list and are optioning Mickey Gasper to Triple-A Worcester. Boston also transferred Roman Anthony to the 60-Day IL.

González is batting fifth and DH'ing tonight for the Red Sox in their series finale against the New York Yankees.

The utility man has been out all season after undergoing left shoulder surgery during spring training. González began a rehab assignment early this month with Double-A Portland, but it was paused when he experienced hip flexor soreness on June 20. Despite the setback, he resumed his rehab shortly thereafter. In six rehab games, González went 2-for-18 with a home run and two walks.

The Red Sox have missed González after coming off a stellar second season with the ballclub in 2025. Across a career-high 96 games last year, the 29-year-old slashed .305/.343/.483 with nine home runs, 53 RBI and an OPS of .826, all career-bests.

González's return to the lineup is also a huge boost for Boston's infield, as it has been decimated by injuries for much of this season. Trevor Story has been on the shelf since May after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia. Isiah Kiner-Falefa has a forearm injury, Nick Sogard is nursing a right oblique strain, and the Red Sox most recently lost shortstop Marcelo Mayer to a forearm injury.

The Red Sox, though, are finally getting some relief with the return of González. As already mentioned, the Red Sox are wrapping up a four-game series tonight against the Yankees and are looking to sweep the series against their AL East foes.

Boston enters Sunday still in last place in the AL East at 35-46, but has won six out of their last 10. They're also just 5.5 games back of the third and final Wild Card spot in the weak American League.
