The Boston Red Sox made a major move on Friday. The team released 2-time World Series winner Walker Buehler following a disappointing showing in the 2025 season.

The 31-year-old closed out the 2024 season as he recorded the final out of the year. While working as a reliever, Buehler came out of the bullpen for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the New York Yankees and threw a scoreless 9th inning to clinch the World Series.

After the conclusion of the season, he became a free agent. In December, he would sign a 1-year $21.05 million deal with the Red Sox.

His time in Boston saw him go through another rollercoaster ride. Along with injuries and inconsistent performances, the right-hander never found his groove. A few days ago, he was moved to the bullpen of the team.

Before the start of the three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Red Sox announced that they had released the 2-time MLB All-Star.

Red Sox’s Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow  would later open up about the decision to release the veteran pitcher. While addressing the media, Breslow expressed that the circumstances had “changed” due to the injury of Richard Fitts , leaving the team needing a starter.

Our hope and our expectation was we were going to be able to provide enough runway to give him a chance to settle in and transition into that role and then contribute down the stretch and get some meaningful outs for us, but circumstances changed.

Craig Breslow said

The Red Sox would turn to their farm system and call up left-hander Payton Tolle from Triple-A Worcester. Meanwhile, Buehler’s tenure with the team ended with him having a 7-7 record, a 5.45 ERA, while making 22 starts.

Payton Tolle shines in Red Sox debut following departure of Walker Buehler

The Boston Red Sox on Friday announced that they had parted ways with Walker Buehler. The former Los Angeles Dodgers star was released from the team following a mixed season with the team. Payton Tolle, who was called up from the minor league following the release of Buehler, would shine in his MLB debut.

In a matchup against Pittsburgh Pirates’ ace Paul Skenes , Tolle stole the show and won the hearts of the crowd at Fenway Park. In his first start, the 22-year-old pitched 5.1 innings, gave up 2 runs through 3 hits, and picked up 8 strikeouts. He would receive a standing ovation from the fans after he left the mound.

Unfortunately for him, his team ended up losing the game. The Red Sox lost 4-2, which saw their 4-game winning run come to an end. With this loss, the team is 75-61, 3rd in the AL East Standings behind the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Gary Sheffield’s son claims Yankees should sign Walker Buehler

After failing to make the desired impact on the team, the Boston Red Sox on Friday released Walker Buehler. Following his release, Gary Sheffield‘s son, Gary Sheffield Jr., expressed that the New York Yankees should sign the right-handed pitcher.

Sheffield Jr., who is the host of the Yankees YouTube podcast “Yankees Unloaded“, claimed that the Bronx Bombers could use the MLB veteran from the bullpen to save the one-inning arms for the remainder of the season.

The Yankees should sign Walker Buehler as a multi-inning arm out the pen. Protect your one-inning guys the remaining 28 games this season.

The Yankees have had some trouble with their bullpen in the past few months. The reigning American League champions, though, have bounced back in recent weeks and have been 15-6 since August 6th, the best record in MLB over that span.
