The Boston Red Sox did not have Roman Anthony for most of the season with a partially torn tendon connecting his right ring finger to his wrist.
Anthony aggravated his injury in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees after making a late return to the team in the final weeks of the regular season. Imaging after he exited Game 1 of the Wild Card Series revealed some new strains as well.
"He's had a bunch of follow-up appointments here, including imaging," chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters on Monday during the end-of-season press conference. " We're still collecting information, still working through what the kind of right course of treatment is, and it does not seem that there's any type of surgical intervention and that rest is likely the best path to recovery."
Anthony signed an eight-year, $130 million extension with the Red Sox shortly after making his debut, and is the face of the franchise. As a rookie, he proved why he was the top prospect in baseball and instantly made a huge impact. However, he missed the 2025 postseason with an injury and missed most of this season with an injury.
Before his injury, he was not playing well, but in his defense, nobody on the team was. He had a .229 batting average through his first 30 games. However, after he returned on Aug. 30, he slashed .262/.321/.476 with four home runs in 25 games.
He looked more like himself after returning, but admitted that he was never really 100%. Even though he was resting while he was hurt, he was still trying to ramp up and return. Now, in the offseason, he can properly rest without the pressure of trying to return in time for the postseason. The Red Sox need him to be healthy to get where they want to go, and hopefully he is good to go when spring training begins.
