Red Sox Star Leaves Game Early Against Yankees

The Boston Red Sox may suffer two losses on Sunday.

Trailing the New York Yankees by a score of 7-0 at the time, Red Sox star first baseman Willson Contreras left the game in the seventh inning.

Andruw Monasterio came into the contest to play second base and bumped Nick Sogard over to first base.

It’s unclear whether Contreras injured himself on a specific play. The Red Sox will likely provide an update on Contreras shortly.

The Red Sox cannot afford to lose Contreras for any period of time as they’re in a heated pennant race. Contreras is one of Boston’s star players and a veteran leader in the clubhouse.

In 125 games this season, Contreras is slashing .274/.384/.516 with a .900 OPS, 26 home runs and 79 RBI. He also has two Outs Above Average at first base, which is tied for 7th in baseball. Contreras was named to the AL All-Star team in July.

Contreras has helped lead the Red Sox to a dramatic turnaround this season after they began the campaign with a 32-46 record. Since then, the Red Sox have gone 42-16 to roar back into contention. They currently hold the second wild-card spot in the AL.

If the Yankees hold on to win today, the Red Sox will trail them by four games in the standings. However, the Yankees will also have the tiebreaker over them (7-6 against them in the season series) if they finish the regular season with the same record. This would give the Yankees home field advantage over Boston if they meet in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
