Red Sox Trade Idea Lands Bullpen Help From Mariners

The Boston Red Sox have their second baseman of the future in Kristian Campbell. The rookie has already proven he can handle Big League pitching and earned himself an eight-year, $60 million extension not even a month into his career.

With Campbell fortifying the four, backup infielder David Hamilton is looking more and more expendable. While he is not going to light the league on fire at the plate (career .226 hitter with a .645 OPS and 79 OPS+), he did have eight home runs and 33 stolen bases over 98 games in 2024.

One team desperate for any type of support at the plate and on the bags is the Seattle Mariners. Outside of Julio Rodríguez, this lineup does not instill much fear in opposing pitchers.

Sure, Dylan Moore is off to a hot start, and Randy Arozarena was the big offseason acquisition, but this is a team with an elite starting rotation and bullpen, and they need to capitalize on their arms.

According to Adam Jude of the Seattle Times, the Mariners are searching for infield help as injuries have forced defensive juggling.

Red Sox receive: LHP Gabe Speier

Mariners receive: 2B David Hamilton, RHP Luis Guerrero (No. 27)

Seattle would have a tough time giving up Speier, who has a phenomenal four-seam, sinker, slider combination and has not allowed a run through five and 2/3 innings this season. However, even though Hamilton is not the most coveted name, he would be an upgrade over current second baseman Ryan Bliss.

Plus, the Mariners are more than equipped to absorb bullpen losses with arguably the best starting rotation in baseball eating innings.

For Boston, Hamilton is a sunk cost, and Guerrero is an intriguing prospect in Triple-A, but it's worth the sacrifice for Speier, who would instantly upgrade a bullpen in need of southpaws.

This is not your typical blockbuster trade idea but a potential marriage for both teams with obvious needs.
