The Boston Red Sox are 33-36, sitting behind five teams for the final wild card spot in the AL. Unless they get hot soon, one MLB Insider believes there is a good chance they will be sellers at the MLB trade deadline.
According to The Athletic's Jim Bowden, one of those players should be Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, sending him to the San Diego Padres. In fact, he has Duran as the Padres' favorite target to fill the spot.
With a young star like Roman Anthony arriving in the majors, and a cheap contract for Duran that has a club option for 2026, this move could return high-level value for Boston.
"The Padres have been trying to mix and match in left field since Jurickson Profar departed in free agency to the Braves," Bowden writes. "Enter Duran, who last season led the AL in doubles and triples while hitting 21 homers and stealing 34 bases."
According to Bowden, the Padres are already targeting Duran.
With top prospect Roman Anthony arriving in the majors and a cheap contract for Duran that has team control for three more seasons, this move could return high-level value for Boston.
However, Bowden notes one roadblock to a deal getting done.
"Boston needs starting pitching help in return, and the Padres really don’t have that to offer," Bowden writes. "They could dangle their top prospects, but I’m not sure Boston would bite on that type of offer for Duran."
The Padres have more than a month until the deadline to figure out how to make a deal work. With reports of the Padres' interest coming this early in the process, there is plenty of time to negotiate a deal.
