Red Sox Unveil Plan for Adley Rutschman

The soaring Boston Red Sox hit a snag over the weekend, dropping back-to-back games for the first time since July 1st and missing out on the chance to claim their tenth straight series victory.

Now turning the focus to a seven-game road trip beginning on Monday, the club could have reinforcements on the way.

Trade deadline acquisition Adley Rutschman, who began a rehab assignment on Saturday with the Worcester Red Sox, will travel with the team to Toronto and could be activated off the injured list as soon as Tuesday.

The news was first reported by Ian Browne of MLB.com and later confirmed by manager Chad Tracy in his postgame presser.

"He's gonna have a workout day with us tomorrow," Tracy said. "We'll assess and see where he's at, how he feels and go from there."

Rutschman's most recent big-league game was on July 18th with the Baltimore Orioles before he hit the 10-day IL with left wrist inflammation. In his first rehab game on Saturday, the 28-year-old went 1-for-2 with a two-run double and two walks while throwing out a runner trying to steal. He lead off as the DH on Sunday but did not manage a hit before he was pinch-hit for.

Tracy said that the decision to activate Rutschman will be based on how he responds to his workouts and batting practice on Monday. Nonetheless, it's a positive sign that the club feels comfortable pulling him away from his rehab assignment after just two starts in Triple-A.

Since joining the Red Sox, the switch-hitting catcher has continued to indicate that his wrist feels much better, but both he and the team were hesitant to provide any kind of timeline until they got a chance to get a closer look at it.

After exploding for a combined 43 runs in four games during the week at Fenway, Boston managed just three in each of their two losses to the A's this weekend. Rutschman, who has a .764 OPS this season, should be a definitive boost to a lineup featuring two light-hitting catchers.

The Red Sox will open the road trip with four games against the Blue Jays in Toronto before going to Pittsburgh for a three-game weekend set against the Pirates.
