Red Sox Veteran Makes Huge Admission on Roman Anthony

It's not very often a Major League Baseball veteran makes a statement as profound as the one Boston Red Sox infielder Abraham Toro did on Tuesday.

Speaking with Christopher Smith of MassLive, Toro, in his seventh season in MLB and first with the Red Sox, said that Boston's No. 1 prospect on MLB Pipeline, Roman Anthony, is the best minor league hitter he's ever seen.

“I don’t say this lightly — I think he’s [Anthony] the best minor league hitter I’ve ever seen," Toro told Smith. “I think he can be an absolute star in MLB. It just shows what he’s doing.”

Toro's high praise for Anthony creates massive expectations and hefty player comparisons. Smith pointed out that Toro was a fellow minor league teammate of Chicago Cubs superstar and former Houston Astros prospect Kyle Tucker.

Red Sox fans are anxious for Anthony's eventual promotion to MLB, as the 20-year-old is batting .305/.419/.514 with five home runs and just four more strikeouts (26) than walks (22) this season at Triple-A Worcester.

Toro had a front-row seat to Anthony's at-bats. He played 28 games with Triple-A Worcester before his promotion to MLB with the Red Sox on May 3.

The left-handed hitting Anthony has driven nine of his 11 extra-base hits this season to either center field or left field.

“The thing that impressed me the most is you don’t see young guys going that often for power to the opposite field,” Toro told Smith about Anthony's offensive prowess. “And he stays there. And he’s not really trying to pull the ball. Whenever he does, it’s kind of like by accident.”

Anthony remains at Triple-A Worcester for now, but if he continues to produce this level of offensive production, the Red Sox may soon feel they must call him up.
