It isn't a matter of if, but of when, for the Boston Red Sox to call up Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony. Whether Mayer or Anthony is the better player depends on who you ask.
However, while that doesn't have to be an argument, as the Red Sox are very lucky to have both players in their farm system, it likely also won't come down to who the organization thinks is the better player.
If the organization believes that Anthony is better, that might not mean much. Mayer, an infielder, has a much easier path to the big league level.
According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, when asked if the team will call up Mayer or Anthony first, he said right now, it'll be Mayer. He added that with the Red Sox's infield situation, he makes the most sense to call up.
“Right now, I’d say Mayer. The Red Sox are deep in the outfield already so I’m not seeing an immediate path for Anthony. Mayer is also a year older. Trevor Story’s current deep slump at the plate bears watching considering how well Mayer is swinging at Worcester,” he wrote.
The question now turns to when the organization could call him up, do they want to disrespect a veteran like Trevor Story and move him to the bench, or make him change positions?
Perhaps, but ultimately, the Red Sox must do what's best for the organization. If having Mayer in the lineup daily will help them win, that's what needs to happen.
This team is very talented, but hasn't played the baseball they've been looking to play. Perhaps Mayer could give them the spark they need.
