In a move that stunned Boston Red Sox fans around the world, the Red Sox shipped off Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants for four players. The move was immediately met with questions and controversy.
The next day, there were countless pieces published about the relationship between Devers and the Red Sox organization. Just 24 hours later, Craig Breslow, Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer, commented on the Devers trade and threw a shot at Devers on his way out in a post from Jeff Passan on Twitter/X.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow on succeeding without Rafael Devers in 2025: “I do think there’s a real chance that at the end of the season, we’re looking back and we’ve won more games than we otherwise would’ve.”

"I do think there's a real chance that at the end of the season," Breslow said. "We're looking back and we've won more games than we otherwise would've."
This comment from Breslow effectively called Devers' impact on the Red Sox season inconsequential, or that the players received will more than make up for Devers' departure. With how great Devers has been for the Red Sox in 2025, that comment is a ridiculous one to make.
In 2025, Devers through 272 at-bats had 74 hits, 47 runs scored, 18 doubles, 15 home runs, 58 RBIs, an AL-leading 56 walks, and 76 strikeouts. Devers, in what's likely his final season in a Red Sox uniform, batted .272 with a .401 on-base percentage and a .504 slugging percentage.
Overall, Devers in 2025 had a .905 OPS and was one of the best hitters in the sport through the first few months of the season. For Breslow to make this statement, that the team will be better off without him, is a ridiculous stance to take.
Devers' impact on the team was monumental, and while there was friction within the organization, Devers is too good to trade him away instead of working out a solution.
After playing in Boston for nine seasons and over 1,000 games, Devers is no longer a Red Sox player. The entire trade saga has been frustrating for Red Sox fans, and this comment from Breslow is a ridiculous one to make, especially less than a day later.
