Red Sox's Sonny Gray is prime extension candidate

Sonny Gray was expected to be a rental option when he was acquired by the Boston Red Sox during the 2025-26 offseason.

Although Gray is nominally under team control through 2027, it seemed unlikely that the Red Sox would pick up his $30 million team option. He had posted a 4.07 ERA and a 1.164 WHIP over his 347 innings between 2024 and 2025, striking out 404 batters with 77 walks. While that is solid production from a middle-of-the-rotation starter, he likely would not have received $30 million as a free agent.

That narrative has changed. Gray has emerged as a co-ace for the Red Sox, posting a 2.48 ERA and a 1.121 WHIP over his 101.2 innings entering Thursday, striking out 90 batters with 28 walks. He leads the majors in wins (12) and winning percentage (.923) as the Red Sox have lost only four of his 18 starts.

Gray has provided more than just an excellent performance. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reported that Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras were speaking to the team after their 15-game winning streak was snapped, beating manager Chad Tracy to the punch. That leadership could make a difference, particularly as the Red Sox lean on young pitchers such as Payton Tolle, Jake Bennett and Connelly Early.

In theory, the Red Sox could have a crowded rotation in 2027, especially if they keep Gray on board. However, at least one of their young pitchers may land elsewhere at the Aug. 3 trade deadline. 

Sonny Gray has made an impact on and off the mound for the Boston Red Sox. It may be in their best interests to lock him into an extension.
