Reds Make Devastating Decision on Hunter Greene

"He threw his side yesterday," Krall told reporters on Wednesday. "He had some soreness when he came out of his side, and we sent him to go see the doctor first thing this morning. I'm not going to go into that until we have the other doctor's opinion."

The injury came seemingly out of nowhere for Greene. After throwing a side session on Tuesday, Greene felt soreness in his elbow and underwent an MRI on Wednesday. Understandably, there is no timetable for Greene's return, and it is safe to say that the rest of his 2026 season is now in jeopardy.

After returning to the rotation on July 4, Greene has made five starts. The former MLB All-Star looked rusty, posting a 2-2 record with an inflated 6.83 ERA and 1.373 WHIP. Greene still had a high strikeout rate, but he has allowed 29 hits and 21 earned runs in just over 27 innings of work.

With the Reds well back of the National League playoff picture, we can expect them to exercise caution with Greene. For a pitcher who throws as hard as Greene does, recurring elbow injuries are not to be taken lightly. Krall did mention that the next steps would be determined by the results of Greene's second opinion from Dr. ElAttrache.

Greene was scheduled to start on Thursday but will now be replaced by Andrew Abbott. In a corresponding move, the Reds called up RHP Luis Mey from Triple-A Louisville.
