Reds' Sonny Gray on IL with groin strain

The Cincinnati Reds were able to activate first baseman Joey Votto from the injured list on Tuesday after he missed over a month of action with a fractured thumb but lost a different type of starter later that night.

Ahead of Wednesday's matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Reds placed starting right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray on the 10-day IL with a right groin strain. In a corresponding roster move, Cincinnati recalled right-hander Art Warren from Triple-A Louisville.

Per the official MLB website, Gray was pulled after three innings of work during Tuesday's game against Milwaukee when he felt discomfort in his leg while tossing warmup pitches ahead of the top of the fourth.

"I've never felt this before," he said after what became a 5-1 Reds loss, according to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "I don't think it's bad, bad, bad."

Gray heads to the IL with a 1-4 record and a 3.42 ERA with 65 strikeouts across 10 starts and 50 total innings pitched this season. The Reds, meanwhile, had a four-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday to fall to 28-30, and they trail the first-place Brewers by five games in the National League Central standings.
