Reds To Select Carlos Jorge

The Reds are set to select the contract of outfielder Carlos Jorge from Triple-A Louisville, as first reported by Mike Rodriguez. Cincinnati has a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move. First baseman/outfielder Michael Toglia recently underwent shoulder surgery and is not yet on the 60-day IL, which gives them a straightforward option.

Jorge, 22, will make his big league debut the first time he takes the field. He’s split the 2026 season between Double-A and Triple-A, posting a combined .308/.376/.427 batting line. A left-handed hitter, Jorge has popped eight homers this season and swiped 33 bags in 38 attempts while drawing walks at an 8.6% clip against a 20.1% strikeout rate.

Baseball America ranks Jorge as the Reds’ No. 12 prospect. He sits 16th on MLB.com’s rankings and ninth at FanGraphs. Scouting reports all note that he has below-average power but plus speed and contact skills. Jorge was originally signed out of his native Dominican Republic as a shortstop, but he began getting outfield experience in 2023 and has played there exclusively in each of the past two seasons. He’s used that plus speed and a strong throwing arm to develop into a plus outfield defender.

Jorge lacks power and hasn’t regularly posted strong walk rates in the minors, which limits his overall ceiling. His speed, glove and contact skills give him a relatively high floor, however. He has the makings of a nice fourth outfielder, but the generally unsettled nature of Cincinnati’s outfield group could create an opportunity for a larger role.

TJ Friedl’s poor season at the plate could make him an offseason non-tender candidate. Noelvi Marte hasn’t hit much since serving an 80-game PED suspension a couple years back. JJ Bleday was outstanding for the first few months of the 2026 season after signing a bargain deal last winter, but he’s hitting .188/.309/.333 dating back to mid-June. Rookie Héctor Rodríguez has hit decently but only has 22 big league games under his belt. Dane Myers has gotten a fair bit of playing time in 2026 but is more of a platoon bat and reserve outfielder than a regular.

Suffice it to say, there’s ample opportunity if Jorge impresses down the stretch, but Cincinnati should be in the market for some significant outfield upgrades this winter as they look to retool for the 2027 campaign.
