Reed Garris Ready to Lead Clemson Baseball’s Bullpen in 2025
USA TODAY Sports

Once a catcher, Garris made the transition to pitcher out of necessity—but in doing so, he became one of the Tigers’ most reliable bullpen arms. Coming off a strong 2024 campaign, where he earned NCBWA Stopper of the Year watchlist honors and an All-ACC Academic selection, Garris is eager to take the mound and make an even bigger impact this season.

For Garris and the Tigers, opening the season at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers, is a dream scenario. It’s a chance to make an early statement against some of the best teams in college baseball.

The early-season schedule presents a unique challenge, as Clemson will face several powerhouse programs right out of the gate. But for Garris, that’s exactly what the team wants.

“When you play big-name teams early, you get to see where you stand right away,” he said. “It’s a great test, and I think we’re ready for it.”

Head coach Erik Bakich will be absent for Clemson’s first two games, leading to some lighthearted banter within the clubhouse. Garris joked about Bakich calling into the dugout via radio, but he also made it clear that the team is in good hands with assistant head coach Nick Schnabel and pitching coach Jimmy Belanger.

“We’ve been preparing for months, and our coaching staff is top-tier,” Garris said. “Coach Schnabel and Coach Belanger have us locked in, so we’re adjusting well and staying focused.”

One of the more unique aspects of Garris’ journey is his transition from catcher to pitcher. Originally recruited as a backstop, he shifted to the mound to fill a team need—a move that proved to be a game-changer for Clemson’s bullpen.

His background as a catcher has given him a unique perspective on pitching. Having spent years reading opposing hitters and working closely with pitchers, he understands the game from both sides of the battery.

“I think my time as a catcher helps me a lot on the mound,” Garris said. “I know what a hitter is looking for, how to set them up, and how to keep that competitive edge. It’s a different role, but the drive and mindset stay the same.”

With a stacked schedule, a confident coaching staff, and a clubhouse full of talent, Garris and the Tigers are embracing the challenges ahead. Whether he’s closing out a tight game or pitching in a high-pressure situation, Garris is ready to do whatever it takes to help Clemson win.
