The New York Yankees have temporarily solved their problem at first base. On Saturday, the 27-time World Series champions agreed to terms on a deal with Paul Goldschmidt.
According to YES Network's Jack Curry, the Yankees are signing Goldschmidt to a one-year contract. ESPN's Jeff Passan is reporting that Goldschmidt's deal is worth $12.5 million. That's not bad for the 37-year-old slugger.
"Paul Goldschmidt will sign a 1-year deal with the Yankees. The 37-year old has won 4 Gold Gloves and was the 2022 MVP," Curry said. "... Savvy, short-term signing."
Goldschmidt is no longer considered a MVP-caliber player, but he could still help out the Yankees next season in a major way. For starters, he's a four-time Gold Glove winner. We saw in the World Series just how badly Aaron Boone's squad needed reinforcements to their infield.
As for Goldschmidt's production at the plate, he finished the 2024 season with a .245 average, 22 homers and 65 RBI.
Goldschmidt should be a great fit in New York's clubhouse. After all, he already has a ton of respect for Yankees slugger Aaron Judge.
“I’m just a big fan of his, and he's one of the best hitters on the planet, so I was wanting to learn from him,” Goldschmidt said. “Judge is one of the best people around, too, because everyone that's ever played with him talks so highly about him.”
Goldschmidt's contract with the Yankees will be completed as long as he passes his physical.
So far this offseason, the Yankees have acquired slugger Cody Bellinger, left-handed ace Max Fried, and right-handed reliever Devin Williams. It certainly sounds like they'll add Goldschmidt to that group.
