Rockies Home Opener vs. Phillies: Breakdown and Preview

Fresh off winning their first series of the season, the Colorado Rockies return home to start the Coors Field portion of the schedule on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. mountain. It’s the first of six games at home with three against the Houston Astros to follow this three-game series against the Phillies.

The Rockies (2-4) are coming off winning two out of three games with the defending American League pennant winners, the Toronto Blue Jays. It was a welcome bounce-back from the first series of the year when the Rockies were swept by the Miami Marlins, the last of which was a walk-off win by Miami.

Colorado will need a new starting pitcher on Saturday. The Rockies put left-hander Jose Quintana on the injured list on Thursday with a right hamstring strain. Colorado called up right-hander Valente Bellozo, but it’s not clear if he’ll take the spot in the rotation.

Pitching Matchup

Colorado: RHP Michael Lorenzen (0-0, 6.23) vs. Philadelphia: RHP Aaron Nola (0-0, 5.40)

Lorenzen was unable to get out of the fifth inning in his first start with the Rockies, as he allowed seven hits and three earned runs in 4.1 innings. He struck out four and walked none. This will be his first start at Coors Field, a challenge that he’s said he welcomed and was part of the reason why he signed with Colorado in the first place.

Nola also had some issues in his first start against the Texas Rangers. He went five innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs and two walks against seven strikeouts. Last season was his worst in some time, as he fought injuries and he went 5-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 17 starts, with 97 strikeouts and 28 walks in 94.1 innings.
