Rockies Outright Vimael Machín

The Rockies have sent infielder Vimael Machín outright to the Arizona Complex League, per his transactions tracker at MLB.com. He has the right to elect free agency but the log doesn’t indicate whether he will do so or not.

Machín was selected to the roster on September 5 when Willi Castro landed on the injured list. Ten days later, the club decided to recall Braxton Fulford. Machín was optioned as the corresponding move. In between those moves, Machín got into three games and made six plate appearances. He knocked three singles but also struck out twice. A few days later, when Jose Quintana was reinstated from the 60-day IL, Machín was designated for assignment.

It’s unsurprising that no one claimed Machín off waivers, as he’s a 32-year-old depth guy. This is now the fifth season he has taken part in but he has just 379 plate appearances with a tepid .209/.289/.269 line in those. He has experience at all four infield spots but the lack of offense makes it hard for him to get meaningful playing time.

Machín has been outrighted previously in his career. That gives him the right to reject this assignment and elect free agency. Even if he doesn’t exercise that right for some reason, he would qualify for minor league free agency at season’s end as a guy who has appeared in at least seven seasons on the farm.
