Rockies sign resurgent outfielder to two-year extension

Outfielder Mickey Moniak had been heavily featured in trade rumors ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Instead, he will be a part of the Colorado Rockies core as they look to return to relevance.

The Rockies announced on Tuesday that they have signed Moniak to a two-year extension, buying out his final year of arbitration and one year of free agency. Thomas Harding from MLB.com reported that the deal is worth $16.25 million.

The former first overall selection by the Phillies in the 2016 MLB Draft, Moniak had been a highly regarded prospect but struggled to establish himself in the majors.

He appeared to have broken out in 2023 with the Angels when he produced a .280/.307/.495 batting line with 14 homers and 21 doubles in his 323 plate appearances. However, he struggled once again in 2024 and was released prior to the 2025 season.

Mickey Moniak has found a home with Colorado Rockies

The Rockies signed Moniak to a one-year deal shortly after he hit the open market in what turned out to be a bargain. He had another strong season offensively in 2025, posting a .270/.306/.518 batting line over his 461 plate appearances, hitting a career-high 24 homers and 20 doubles. That breakout continued into this year as Moniak entered Tuesday with a .277/.318/.565 batting line over 283 plate appearances, hitting 18 homers and 13 doubles.

There are some red flags despite that production. Moniak has performed far better at Coors Field, and against right-handed pitching, than he has on the road or against southpaws. Although he can play all three spots in the outfield, his defense is questionable at best. Nonetheless, his power and ability to hit righties should make him a solid part of the Rockies lineup for the next two seasons.
