As the calendar turns to September and MLB clubs prepare for roster expansion, the Kansas City Royals officially teased several moves they “anticipate” they will make on Monday. Perhaps most notably, catching prospect Carter Jensen will get the call to the majors. They will also recall right-hander Luinder Avila from Triple-A Omaha. Meanwhile, Jac Caglianone, himself a top prospect promoted earlier this season, will return from the injured list.

Royals Announce “Anticipated” Roster Moves for Monday

Jensen is the No. 2 Royals prospect according to MLB Pipeline, ranking behind only fellow catcher Blake Mitchell. A Kansas City native, he was taken in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft. This season, he has split time between Double-A and Triple-A. In 111 total games, he is slashing .290/.377/.501 with 20 home runs, 76 RBI, and 10 stolen bases. Showing speed for his position, he also has 20 doubles and five triples this season. Jensen’s listed ETA on MLB Pipeline is 2026, suggesting this will be his cup of coffee before becoming a full-timer next season if all goes well.

Caglianone has been out since July 27 with a hamstring strain. Before that, he was still working on figuring out major league pitching. In 41 games since his call-up, the 22-year-old is slashing .147/.205/.280 with five home runs and 10 RBI. The sixth overall pick in last year’s draft, it is likely that his quick rise through the minor leagues is contributing to his early struggles in the majors. If he can put it together in September, though, he could help the Royals get closer to a playoff spot.

Avila, a 24-year-old rookie reliever, has exactly one major league inning under his belt. It came on August 13 against the Washington Nationals. He threw a scoreless frame that included his first career strikeout in an 8-7 Royals loss.
