San Diego Padres Roster Moves 5/22

The San Diego Padres enter play today with a 25-26 record and are eight games back from the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. They are coming off a series win over the Atlanta Braves three games to one but lost the first game of the three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds last evening. The team has announced three moves ahead of the second game of the series.

RHP – Luis Patino

The Padres transferred Patino from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list with a right elbow inflammation. Patino has yet to pitch in the regular season for the Padres, and now it seems as if we might not see him this season at all. Patino appeared in two games this spring, working in 2.1 innings with a 19.29 ERA. He allowed three hits, five earned runs, one home run, three walks, and struck out two during his short spring training before being shut down.

OF – David Peralta

The Padres selected Peralta’s contract from the El Paso Chihuahuas today before the game with the Reds. Peralta started the year by being signed by the Chicago Cubs as a free agency and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after spring training. The Padres selected his contract from Iowa on May 18th. While with Iowa, he played in 20 games, scoring ten runs, with 15 hits, three doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs, 12 walks, 13 strikeouts, and one stolen base. He slashed .217/.341/.348 with a .689 OPS during his time with Iowa. He only played three games with El Paso, scoring three runs, two hits, and one RBI, and slashed .182/.308/.182 with a .490 OPS.

2B – Xander Bogaerts

The Padres placed Bogaerts on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 21st with a left shoulder fracture. There are no signs of ligament damage; he must allow the bone to heal and rehab before returning to the Padres. He has played in 47 games so far for the Padres with 23 runs scored, 41 hits, six doubles, four home runs, 14 RBIs, 12 walks, 40 strikeouts, and four stolen bases. He has slashed .219/.265/.316 with a .581 OPS on the season.

Wrap Up:

The loss of Patino to a more extended stay on the injured list isn’t ideal, but the team seems to be managing, as he’s not pitched at all this season. The loss of Bogaerts is a much bigger deal; the veteran does not yet have a timetable for his return, but one would think it would be longer than the ten days designated. The Padres brought up Peralta, who will most likely serve a role from the bench, while Luis Arraez fills the void at second base. The Padres are in second place currently and are trying to pick up ground in the West. The injury to Bogaerts hurts, but luckily, the trade for Arraez softens the blow. It will be interesting to see what happens in 10 days with Bogaerts. It could lead to additional moves, but it’s too early to tell.
