Scott Blewett quickly finds a new home

All of Braves Country was pleased to hear yesterday that Craig Kimbrel is set to make his highly anticipated return to the place where it all began this weekend against the Giants. But in order to make room for him on the 40-man roster, somebody had to be designated for assignment, and a large part of the fan base was not thrilled when they learned it would be Scott Blewett, even after he surrendered five earned runs in Thursday’s ninth-inning collapse.

An argument could be made that Blewett is more deserving of a roster spot than someone like Rafael Montero. Blewett had been more than serviceable for the Braves until his outing on Thursday, and it didn’t take long for him to find a new home in Baltimore.

Perhaps Scott Blewett didn’t deserve to be the odd man out. It’s very possible money played a factor, given the Braves owe Rafael Montero about three more million after acquiring him in a trade with the Astros earlier in the season. But at the end of the day, who takes up the final spot in the bullpen is the least of the Braves’ worries, as the team aims to rebound from a brutal three-game sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
