The Seattle Mariners announced Tuesday afternoon that they have claimed outfielder Jacob Hurtubise off waivers. Hurtubise was designated for assignment by the Reds a few days ago and will immediately go to Triple-A Tacoma since the Mariners have a full big league roster.
This is a reunion for both the Mariners and Hurtubise, as Seattle originally drafted the 27-year-old back in 2019 in the 30th round. He opted not to sign with the club and returned to school for one more year, playing for West Point. He would later sign with the Reds in 2020 as an undrafted free agent.
Hurtubise has had little experience in the big leagues so far in his career, only amassing a total of 83 big league plate appearances in the last two seasons. He had a slash line of .167/.291/.212 in that span.
Down in Triple-A is where Hurtubise is a different breed, as in 502 plate appearances playing for the Louisville Bats, he has a slash line of .270/.416/.337 and displays his speed at an impressive rate, stealing 30/34 bags. Hurtubise's season best in stolen bases was recent as he swiped 45 bags in his 2023 campaign.
Hurtubise will most likely be used as yet another Mariners option in the outfield, as that is one of the few places on the field that Seattle desperately needs the most help in.
