Seattle Mariners Fall 2 Spots in MLB Power Rankings

It was a busy time at the MLB Trade Deadline for the Seattle Mariners, who picked up Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor to help bolster their infield. Oh yes, Suárez also brings over his powerful home run bat to team up with Cal Raleigh.

Now, the question is will it be enough to catapult Seattle into the American League West Division lead over the Houston Astros? Mariners fans sure hope so. Entering play on Wednesday, August 6, the Mariners are three games behind the Astros. The Athletic has Seattle at No. 12 in the latest MLB Power Rankings, down two spots from last week.

Grant Brisbee of The Athletic offers some perspective on the Mariners' current situation. When reviewing Seattle's trade deadline activity, Brisbee used a single word: Streamlined.

Seattle Mariners tighten up lineup with a couple of big bats, hoping they can help the team reach AL postseason play

"Nothing cute, nothing fancy," Brisbee wrote. "The Mariners’ offense has been a surprising strength, even outside of Cal Raleigh, but they weren’t getting anything out of their corner infield spots.

"So they called up one of the best offensive teams in the league and traded for their pending free agents at both positions," Brisbee wrote. "Both players can thump. Seems like a good plan. The pitching will need to return to its preseason promise to be a juggernaut of a roster, but the elements are there. There’s a reason why the Mariners have the fourth-best projected record in baseball for the rest of the season."

Raleigh has 42 home runs and 88 RBIs for Seattle, making a statement to become this season's AL MVP. He has a challenger in two-time AL MVP winner Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees. But the "Big Dumper" just might see some more good pitches with Suárez in the Seattle lineup.

Raleigh is hitting .249 with an OBP of .356, according to StatMuse. Suárez has 37 homers and 89 RBIs, giving Seattle a powerful one-two punch in its lineup. Naylor is hitting .287 with 13 homers and 63 RBIs.

Do the Mariners have enough to make the AL postseason? It appears that they do, especially with the added bats to the lineup. Their pitching must continue to improve and get better behind the arms of George Kirby and Logan Gilbert. Seattle wants to make it beyond the final game of the season.
