Seattle Mariners Promote Top Prospects to Double-A

The Seattle Mariners have an exciting farm system. It has been dubbed one of the best in the MLB by many outlets. The Mariners currently have nine prospects in the Top 100 per MLB Pipeline, which leads in the MLB. One of those prospects, Cole Young, has made his major league debut and is performing well after a slow start at the Big League level. Two of those prospects are moving up in the minor leagues after torrid starts.

Both Outfielder/Designated Hitter Lazaro Montes and Infielder Michael Arroyo are moving from the High-A Everett AquaSox to the Double-A Arkansas Travelers. Montes is the number two prospect in the Mariners system and No. 32 overall in the MLB. Arroyo is seventh in the system and No. 77 in the MLB. At the beginning of the year, the AquaSox roster with loaded with talent, also featuring prospects Colt Emerson (No. 16 in MLB, No. 1 for Mariners), Jonny Farmelo (No. 76, No. 6), and switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje (No. 86, No. 8).

Lazaro Montes

Montes has drawn numerous comparisons to Yordan Alvarez. The 6-foot-5 outfielder slashed .268/.387/.572 in 67 games with Everett. The 20-year-old native of Cuba led the Northwest League in home runs with 18, RBIs with 50, slugging, and OPS. He also had five triples and 48 walks to 83 strikeouts.

Michael Arroyo

Arroyo owned a .269/.422/.512 slash line in 65 games for Everett. The 20-year-old infielder had 14 doubles, 15 home runs, 41 runs, and 39 RBIs. He was also at the top of the Northwest League in several categories. Arroyo has played third base, shortstop, and second base at the professional level.

It’s not likely that the Mariners will see these guys in the big leagues this season. Though they are just one call closer if the Mariners get hit by the injury bug once again. There is a very high possibility that one or both of them could make the Opening Day roster for the Mariners if they put together a strong spring, like Julio Rodriguez did back in 2022.
