Leody Taveras found his time with the Texas Rangers reached a final point. But the Seattle Mariners discovered they had a need for someone like him on their team. Good thing he was around on Wednesday afternoon.
Taveras, claimed off waivers by the Mariners, connected on a game-tying, two-out single in the eighth inning. He then scored the go-ahead run on a Dylan Moore base hit, leading Seattle over the Athletics 6-5. That put the finishing touches on a five-run Mariners comeback at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, Calif.

Taveras' hit drove in pinch-runner Miles Mastrobuoni with one out in the eighth. He stole second base and scored on Moore’s single off Athletics losing pitcher Noah Murdock (1-1).
“A great at-bat,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said, according to MLB.com. “He got a pitch that he was looking for that was maybe a little bit higher in the zone. And instead of trying to do too much, just stayed with it.”
Athletics starter Gunnar Hoglund left the game, his second major-league start, with a 5-1 lead after he issued a one-out walk to Cal Raleigh in the sixth. Reliever Mitch Spence came in and immediately issued a walk before Rowdy Tellez hit his fifth homer to make it a one-run game at 5-4. Hoglund ended up being charged with two runs in 5 1/3 innings.

“There's really no panic right now, and I think that's big for us,” Tellez said after the game. “Everybody's leaning on each other and trusting each other. Everybody is putting together good at-bats.”
The Athletics' Jacob Wilson posted two doubles and an RBI in his first four-hit game. That helped the Athletics jump out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning off Seattle starter Bryan Woo. JJ Bleday had a two-run double, and Lawrence Butler added a solo homer for the Athletics.
Mariners reliever Andrés Muñoz ended up allowing a leadoff single to Luis Urías in the ninth, but struck out Wilson looking to earn his 13th save. Muñoz hasn’t allowed an earned run in 18 innings, The Associated Press reported. Eduard Bazardo (1-0), another Seattle reliever, recorded four outs for the win.
