Series Recap: Texas Rangers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks 5/28-5/29

The defending World Series champion Texas Rangers had a two-game homestand versus the defending National League champion Arizona Diamondbacks at Globe Life Field on Tuesday and Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know about the Rangers vs. Diamondbacks World Series rematch in Arlington, Texas.

Tuesday, May 28

The Rangers defeated the Diamondbacks 4-2 in the first game on Tuesday night. Texas improved to 26-29, while Arizona fell to 25-29. Before the ballgame, Texas tweeted a video about its design and inspiration process behind its upcoming Asian American Heritage Night on Friday, June 7 at 7:05 p.m. Central. Texas also announced its next gaming tournament featuring Fortnite on Thursday, May 30, at 7:00 p.m. Central. Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi pitched just three innings and gave up five hits, two earned runs, and two strikeouts before leaving the mound. On the other hand, Diamondbacks starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt pitched seven innings and gave up six hits, four earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts. After a scoreless first inning, Arizona opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Pavin Smith doubled on a line drive to Travis Jankowski. Christian Walker scored for a 1-0 lead. Eugenio Suarez was out on a sacrifice fly to Nathaniel Lowe in foul territory. Smith made it a 2-0 game. Jake McCarthy went to third base with one out. The Rangers finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Josh Smith singled on a line drive to Corbin Carroll. Travis Jankowski scored to cut the Diamondbacks’ lead in half, 2-1. Corey Seager went to third base. The Rangers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Corey Seager homered on a fly ball to right center field. Jonah Heim and Marcus Semien scored to make it a 4-2 game. The Rangers held on to beat the Diamondbacks 4-2 after nine innings. For Texas, Kirby Yates pitched one inning and gave up two strikeouts. And, for Arizona, Kevin Newman went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Wednesday, May 29

The Rangers took the lead and continued to beat the Diamondbacks 5-1 in the second game on Wednesday afternoon. Texas improved to 27-29, while Arizona fell to 25-30. Before the ballgame, many media outlets reported Wednesday will end Marcus Semien’s 349 consecutive games started streak. Semien last had a day off on May 22, 2022, when Chris Woodward was the Rangers’ manager. Rangers starting pitcher Dane Dunning pitched five innings and gave up three hits, four walks, and six strikeouts. Meanwhile, Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson pitched six innings and gave up five hits, four earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts. After two scoreless innings, Texas opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Jonah Heim doubled on a line drive to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Wyatt Langford scored for a 1-0 lead. The Rangers added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nathaniel Lowe grounded into a double play to Ketel Marte, who threw the ball to Kevin Newman, who threw it to Christian Walker. Adolis Garcia scored for a 2-0 lead. Leody Taveras was out at second base, and Lowe was out at first base with two outs. The Rangers made it a four-run game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Corey Seager homered on a fly ball to right field. Ezequiel Duran scored to extend the Rangers’ lead to 4-0. The Rangers added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Nathaniel Lowe was out on a sacrifice fly to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Josh Smith scored to extend the Rangers’ lead to 5-0 with two outs. Wyatt Langford singled on a fly ball to Gurriel Jr. Adolis Garcia scored to expand the Rangers’ lead to 6-0. Leodys Taveras went to second base. The Diamondbacks finally got on the board in the top of the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late. Corbin Carroll singled on a line drive to Wyatt Langford. Gabriel Moreno scored to cut the Rangers’ lead to 5-1 and avoid a shutout bid. Kevin Newman went to second base. The Rangers defeated the Diamondbacks 5-1 after nine innings. For Texas, Kirby Yates pitched 1/3 inning. And, for Arizona, Christian Walker went 1-for-4 with one walk, one stolen base, and two strikeouts.
