The Los Angeles Dodgers had four individual finalists for a 2025 Silver Slugger Award in Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, Will Smith and Shohei Ohtani, and as a collective offense they were up for the National League team honor.
Silver Slugger Awards have been given out annually since 1980 to recognize the best offensive players at each position in each league. Silver Slugger winners are voted upon by Major League managers and coaches, who are unable to vote for players on their own teams.
Freeman was a finalist at first base, along with Pete Alonso (New York Mets) and Matt Olson (Atlanta Braves). The award went to Alonso, who won a Silver Slugger for the first time in his career. It comes at an opportune time as Alonso is a free agent for the second consecutive offseason.
Muncy was among four finalists at third base, with Matt Chapman (San Francisco Giants), Manny Machado (San Diego Padres) and Austin Riley (Atlanta Braves). Machado won a third career Silver Slugger.
Smith was pitted against William Contreras (Milwaukee Brewers) and Hunter Goodman (Colorado Rockies) for the Silver Slugger at catcher in the NL. It went to Goodman, another of this year’s first-time winners.
Ohtani was a finalist at designated hitter with Kyle Schwarber (Philadelphia Phillies) and Christian Yelich (Brewers).
For the NL team Silver Slugger, the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks were finalists. The Dodgers won the award in 2024.
American League Silver Slugger winners will be announced on Friday.
Ohtani won a fourth career Silver Slugger Award, third in a row, and two in as many seasons with the Dodgers. Ohtani finished the year batting .282/.392/.622 with 25 doubles, career-high 55 home runs, and 102 RBI.
Ohtani additionally led the Majors with 146 runs scored and paced the NL with a 1.014 on-base plus slugging percentage.
The Dodgers won the team NL Silver Slugger Award for a second year in a row. They led the NL with 825 runs scored, 244 home runs, 791 RBI and .768 on-base plus slugging percentage.
